Barbara Fassoni Architects' Borromei Loft: A Masterpiece of Modern Design

Winner of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023

Barbara Fassoni Architects' Borromei Loft, a residential design project, is a sophisticated blend of modern design and traditional Milanese architecture. This award-winning design is a testament to the innovative use of space, light, and materials.

The Borromei Loft, located in Milan, was designed by Barbara Fassoni Architects, a team known for their innovative approach to design. The project started in October 2018 and was completed in February 2023. The loft was designed for a single man, with the living room as the heart of the house. The design team included Structural Engineer Mario Pezzotta, MEP Teknema Consulting, Local Architect dMr – Angelo Manenti, and Builder Orma Srl.

The design of the loft is inspired by the architectural elements of Milan's historic centre. It features a series of spaces contained within each other, creating a sense of progression from public to private areas. The loft includes an inner garden, a courtyard, and private rooms. Three uniquely designed staircases connect the two levels of the loft. The central space of the house is a social and bright area that connects the three bedrooms while maintaining their privacy.

What sets the Borromei Loft apart is its innovative use of space and light. The design team faced the challenge of ensuring adequate natural lighting in a space that faces an inner court with poor light. They overcame this by creating wings and new openings that allow light to filter from the large skylight in the living area to the most private rooms. This gives the main area a fluidity that allows it to interact with other rooms.

The materials used in the loft also contribute to its unique design. Natural and painted steel feature prominently, particularly in the staircase. The floor of the living area is made of concrete, and transparent glass is used to maintain the flow between spaces. The loft also features a double row of five opening skylights and a fixed glass box measuring 7x2m, adding to the brightness and openness of the space.

The Borromei Loft is a testament to Barbara Fassoni Architects' ability to blend modern design with traditional architectural elements. The loft's design, which includes elements such as a metall fireplace, big skylight, green interior space, and metall staircase, is a reflection of the team's commitment to creating spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. This commitment has been recognized with the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a prestigious accolade that rewards top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs.

In conclusion, the Borromei Loft is a shining example of innovative residential design. It showcases how thoughtful design and careful material selection can transform a space, creating a home that is not only functional but also a work of art. Barbara Fassoni Architects' Borromei Loft is a testament to the power of design to enhance our living spaces and our lives.
